Fur-trimmed items adorn store hangers and online space at Sportchek, the retailer who said just last year they did not intend on restocking fur products.
The Fur-Bearers were advised of the change by a supporter, who also forwarded a petition calling for Sportchek to stop selling fur. The petition notes the inherently inhumane conditions that wild animals face when trapped against their will and killed, or when slaughtered on factory-style fur farms after living their lives in wire-bottom cages.
The Fur-Bearers predicted the possibility of this last year, when it was first learned that two Canadian Tire subsidiaries were not restocking fur. The pressure from the fur industry along the entire supply chain (from students in fashion programs, to designers at apparel companies, to stores stocking products, to politicians and other industry leaders), along with the corporate demand to worship the Almighty Dollar, were likely factors in the decisions to offer a few fur-trimmed products. But that is also revealing of how best to take action to protect the fur-bearing animals who will be killed en masse as a result of a retailer selling fur-trimmed products.
Take Action
We have three ways you can take action, each just as important to use:
- Sign the petition. Click here to visit the Change.org petition created by a supporter, and share it with family and friends. Keep in mind that petitions are not legally binding and not all companies will take them seriously.
- Email the company. Click here to visit Sportchek’s comment page and let them know you won’t be shopping at their company – or any of their corporate family’s stores, including Canadian Tire – while they sell fur-trimmed products. Send them links to our MakeFurHistory.com campaign website so they can learn the truth about fur. Remember to not use threatening, violent, or aggressive language – simply state the facts and that you’re a consumer who will visit their competition while they offer fur. - Don’t wear fur, and tell people why. The most powerful thing you can do is lead by example. By not wearing fur (or even faux fur) you’re sending a message to everyone who sees you – that you’re warm, beautiful, and happy without it. Talking to your friends, family, or even strangers on public transit about your decision and the realities facing animals killed for their fur is a significant part of this.
