Fur farming ban on the way in Czech Republic

Fur farming ban on the way in Czech Republic

The legislative Chamber of Deputies in the Czech Republic today approved a bill to fully ban fur farms in the European nation, with a final vote of 132 for the ban, 9 against. Twenty representatives abstained.

“Most Deputies have finally come to an agreement that this business is unethical and should be banned,” reads a press release from Svoboda Zviřat (Freedom for Animals), a member of the Fur Free Alliance, of which The Fur-Bearers is also a member. “The approved proposal states that fur farms have to be closed down by January 31, 2019.”

Farmers will also be able to apply for compensation so they can meet long-term financial obligations.

“We thank all the deputies for their decision to meet the wish of the public that considers killing animals for fashion’s sake only to be unethical anachronism,” says Lucie Moravcová of Svoboda Zviřat. “This day represents a historical milestone in animal protection. It is a victory of compassion with other living beings, sentient and capable of feeling pain and suffering. I believe that this is a result of a long-term trend not only in our society but in the whole Europe – society becomes more conscious and considerate towards those who cannot defend themselves. We feel immense joy over today’s decision.”

The bill now needs to enter the Senate and be signed by the President. If it passes, the Czech Republic will be the 13th European nation to have passed bans or phased out fur farms. There are currently nine fur farms with approximately 20,000 mink and fox in the Czech Republic, and a survey showed 83% support for a ban to shut down farms.

Seeing the truth about this inherently inhumane industry opens eyes and hearts, and we know that, with your support, we can #MakeFurHistory in Canada, too.
