Reward bumped to $3,500 for information in leg-hold cruelty case

UPDATE (June 17): Another $1,000 has been pledged, raising the total to $4,500.The harrowing experience of at least one raccoon who has lost a paw to what was likely a leg-hold trap has been heard – and Oak Bay residents are stepping up. An additional $2,000 has been submitted by local animal lovers to top up The Fur-Bearers’ reward to $3,500 for information leading to the identification and conviction of the person(s) responsible for causing the grievous injury.

Residents of the area have told local media that they’ve seen an apparent decline in raccoon populations – and in late May photographed one of many raccoons who are missing appendages.

The injuries are consistent with the damage caused by a leg-hold trap, though the cause has not yet been determined. The Fur-Bearers are working with residents and Oak Bay police to find the individual(s) responsible.

We are also offering our assistance to anyone who may be struggling with wildlife conflict so such drastic action as trapping would not be required.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oak Bay police at 250-592-2424.
