Every year the movers and shakers of local politics from across the province get together to talk about issues they face, and how they plan on finding solutions with the province. And we’re going to be in the middle of it.
The Fur-Bearers purchased a booth at the 2017 Union of BC Municipalities convention September 27 and 28, where we’ll be talking about wildlife co-existence, by-laws, policies, educational opportunities, and the solutions we know can keep animals and residents safe. We’ll have samples of our door hangers that help targeted communities understand attractants and co-existence with cougars, bears, and coyotes; we’ll be handing out information packages that include examples of our non-lethal solutions for beaver dams and activity; and, we’ll be sharing the need for municipalities to pressure the provincial government to give them control over policy and by-laws related to trapping, non-lethal management, and decision making regarding conflict.
How you can help
We’re well prepared to talk about all of these issues, and how we can all play a role in preventing conflict, and co-existence with wildlife. But getting in touch with the hundreds of municipalities across British Columbia (and the rest of Canada) is a Herculean task. By contacting your local councilors and telling them you’d like to know their thoughts on local policy related to trapping, co-existence, and non-lethal management solutions. If they’re interested, introduce us! Just send an email to email@example.com and we’ll connect with your local leaders to provide information and support on these important wildlife issues.
You can also consider making a gift – we’ve spent in excess of $1,200 to attend the UBCM, not including staff and volunteer time, transportation, etc. A gift of as little as $5/month can make a huge difference to us for recovering costs and planning next year’s booth, as well as our day-to-day Living With Wildlife program.
The Fur-Bearers encourage all animal lovers to become involved in local politics to help be a part of achievable change for your furry neighbours – and we’d love to hear how you’re doing it!
Join The Fur-Bearers today and help us provide alternatives to fur and non-lethal solutions to wildlife conflict. We receive no government funding and rely entirely on donations from supporters like you. To become a monthly donor (for as little as $10/month – the cost of two lattes) please click here and help us save lives today.
