Podcasts are kind of like on-demand radio, or the audio-only version of Netflix. You can listen to people talking about just about any subject, in just about any language from anywhere in the world.
Defender Radio, the podcast of The Fur-Bearers, is a weekly show hosted by former award-winning journalist and our Director of Digital Content Michael Howie. Each week features an interview with an expert, researcher, policy maker, advocate, or newsmaker on a subject related to wildlife, animals, or the environment. You can stream or download episodes of Defender Radio onto your computer, smart phone, or tablet, so you can listen any time, anywhere. There are no costs associated – all the software and downloads are absolutely free.
As technology evolves, there are more ways for you to listen. Let’s focus on the easy ways, first.
Stream from the website: You can click on a podcast blog and hit the ‘play’ button in the embedded player. This function will work on any web browser, and most mobile devices, too. The player will stop when you leave the page.
Download from the website: You can click (or right-click/control-click) on the “Download this episode” link in the podcast blog and save the MP3 (audio file) to your computer or device, and play it back with your preferred music or audio software.
Defender Radio is sent out to multiple platforms when new episodes are published, and depending on the type of smart phone or tablet you have, you can subscribe and download (for free) episodes from there, too.
iOS / Apple users: Visit Defender Radio in the Podcasts app. Your phone likely already has this installed (look for the purple button with white ‘signal’ lines), open it up, and search for Defender Radio, or follow this link from your device. You can click the ‘subscribe’ button and download or stream episodes from this app. Listen through the app while connected to WiFi or using data, or download episodes and take it on the go with you.
Android users: Visit Defender Radio in the Google Play Music app. It’s already installed on your phone (look for the orange triangle), open it up, and search for Defender Radio, or follow this link from your device. Click the three vertical dots and ‘subscribe’ to the show. You can also edit this so you’ll be notified when a new episode is posted! Listen through the app while connected to WiFi or using data, or download episodes and take it on the go with you.
There are other popular websites and apps that stream podcasts, and one of the more reliable ones is Stitcher.
Stitcher: You can visit the website and go to Defender Radio, then add it as a favourite, or you can download the app for iOS/Apple devices here or Android devices here. In that app you can search for Defender Radio, favourite it by pressing the plus sign, and download episodes to take with you on the go!

If there’s enough demand, or a donor would like to contribute, it is also possible to create a Defender Radio podcast app for both Android and Apple users. We are currently accepting sponsorships for the show, too. To get more information, please contact Michael@TheFurBearers.com.
