$1,000 reward: skunk dragging leg-hold found in South Vancouver

It is always shocking and disturbing when homeowners find animals injured by traps. But when it’s in the middle of a major city, another dimension of disturbing appears.

The Fur-Bearers were contacted by a South Vancouver couple on Sunday, September 21. They had found (and successfully caught) a skunk who appeared in their backyard, dragging a leg-hold trap. He was transported to the Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. in Burnaby, where he is currently recovering from severe injuries.

The trap appears to be an outdated leg-hold trap, and British Columbia regulations state that no trap can be set within 200 metres of a dwelling, likely making this device illegal in the East 49th Ave and Fraser Street neighbourhood it was found.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the identification and conviction of the person(s) responsible for setting this trap. Anyone with information should contact the Ministry of Environment Report All Poachers and Polluters Line at 877-952-7277. The Fur-Bearers are in communication with the Conservation Officer Service regarding this case.
