Coyotes and wildlife as political pawns

Coyotes and wildlife as political pawns

Identifying problems that don’t exist and promising solutions to resolve them is an easy play for a local politician vying for a council seat. And with municipal elections on the way across the country, wildlife may suddenly find themselves labelled as “problems” that need solving.

In one recent example, a southern Ontario political hopeful spoke to local media, informing them of the presence of coyotes – and the need for the city to do something about it. Residents’ concerns – that they had seen coyotes in the area (there is no indication of conflict) were noted by the reporter. But of greater interest was the commentary from animal control, who have an established education and enforcement program for preventing human conflict with wildlife in the area. They had received no complaints, and upon investigation found no signs of a den or any reason for concern at all.

The Fur-Bearers doesn’t endorse candidates or parties. But we do encourage all our supporters to use critical thinking skills and question those in the political arena when they propose solutions to problems you didn’t know existed – whether it’s dollar beers or managing local wildlife.
