Dutch fur farm ban upheld by Supreme Court

Christmas has now come early for the animals in the Netherlands, as the Supreme Court has upheld legislation that will outlaw fur farming by 2024.

Dutch news sources are confirming that the Supreme Court has ruled against a lower court that agreed with mink farmers who believed their human rights were being violated by the legislation that would phase out all fur farms over an 11-year period.

“The ban on fur farming was introduced in the Netherlands in 2013 and included an 11-year changeover period,” explains English-language news site DutchNews.nl. “In 2014 a lower court found in favour of fur farmers who are furious at being ordered to shut down their companies without compensation.”

A government appeal of that decision was successful, and the fur farmers failed to have it overturned at the Supreme Court – making the 2024 end date of fur farming in the Netherlands absolute law.

“TheSupreme Court, unlike theAdvocateGeneral, considers that … mink holders can recoup their investment during the transition period. This judgment of thecourtbecomes final,” reads a translated version of the decision.

It doesn’t always happen as fast as we want it to, or even as fast as it should. But the long-term, sustainable change necessary to #MakeFurHistory is happening – and it’s thanks to you.
