With Election Day just around the corner, Canadians want to know where the political parties stand on issues that matter to them. In support of our national campaign to end fur farming, on April 4, 2025, we sent a questionnaire to all the major federal parties (Liberals, NDP, Conservatives, Bloc Québécois, and the Green Party) asking two questions:

  1. Does your party support a transition away from fur farming (Y/N)?
  2. If yes, what policy measures would you implement within the first 12 months of office to transition away from fur farming?

The purpose of the questionnaire was to gain a better understanding of where each party stands on the issue and to share this information with you in advance of Election Day on April 28, 2025.

Here is what we heard back from each party in response to the questionnaire:

Q1: Does your party support a transition away from fur farming (Y/N)?

A1: Yes.

Q2: If yes, what policy measures would you implement within the first 12 months of office to transition away from fur farming?

A2: A Green government would take decisive action within the first year to begin phasing out fur farming in Canada. Our approach would start by removing any remaining federal subsidies that support the fur industry and redirecting those funds toward transition assistance for affected workers and businesses.

We would introduce immediate legislation to ban the breeding and confinement of animals for fur, setting clear timelines for closure and enforcement.

We would also recognize animals as sentient beings under Canadian law, laying the foundation for stronger national animal protection standards across all sectors, including agriculture. This recognition would be accompanied by the introduction of comprehensive federal animal welfare legislation, developed in consultation with experts, Indigenous communities, and civil society, to ensure the humane treatment of all animals and address gaps in current provincial frameworks.

In government, we would also create a Parliamentary Committee on Animal Welfare to provide oversight and guidance on animal protection policies, and move to establish a dedicated Ministry or Commissioner for Animal Welfare to coordinate implementation and accountability.

For the Green Party, ending fur farming is part of building a healthier, more sustainable and compassionate future. We will act quickly, collaboratively, and responsibly to achieve this goal.

You may wish to learn more about the overall priorities and specific policies of each party. All the major federal political parties have now released costed platforms, which outline the various priorities and initiatives each party would endeavor to achieve if elected to form government.
