Fur farming has taken another blow as major political parties in Quebec commit to end the farming of animals for their fur. Four of the main political parties expressed their positions on fur farming during a debate on animal protection presented by the Montreal SPCA this week.

According to the agency’s news release, the Parti conservateur du Québec, the Quebec Liberal Party, the Parti Québécois, and Québec solidaire all committed to ending fur farming in the province during the debate. The commitments come just days after the release of disturbing photos obtained by We Animals that document the conditions of two Quebec fur farms, prompting a legal complaint by Canadian animal law organization Animal Justice.

The stance from the political parties in Quebec reflect public attitudes towards fur farming. According to a 2022 poll commissioned by The Fur-Bearers, 76% of Quebecers support a national ban on fur farming – the second highest support for a national ban, only second to British Columbia (81%) which has already seen a ban on mink farming in 2021.

People from coast to coast are making it clear that fur farming has no place in Canada – and lawmakers are listening. The fur farming era is coming to an end.
