Fur farm ban passes first reading in Czech Republic

The dwindling Czech fur farm business took another hit this week as a bill to ban the killing of animals for their fur passed its first reading at the Chamber of Deputies.

The Prague Daily Monitor reported that the draft was submitted by roughly one-quarter of the 200-seat Chamber, and is an amendment to the existing law on animal protection against torture.

“They say the conditions at fur farms meet the given standards but they do not meet the needs of wild animals,” the Daily Monitor reported. “Nine fur farms operate in the country, breeding mostly minks and foxes. Approximately 20,000 animals are killed at the farms a year. The number of farms has been declining for a long time.”

Though the fur industry continuously spouts propaganda indicating “humane treatment” of animals, any examination of the conditions that wild animals are forced to endure shows just how inherently inhumane they are.

We congratulate the Czech Republic for taking this compassionate step forward, and for joining the legion of humane people worldwide calling out to #MakeFurHistory.

We will provide more information on the movement of this legislation as it becomes available.
