August 13th marks International Wolf Day across the globe. It’s an important day to celebrate wolves and all that they do for ecosystems – and also an opportunity to learn more about why they need greater protections.

The Fur-Bearers advocates for many fur-bearing animals in Canada, including wolves. Here are some highlights of our work on wolf issues!

Paper: Social Landscapes of Wolves

A paper funded by and co-authored by The Fur-Bearers was published in the journal Human Dimensions of Wildlife, impacting how scholars and policymakers will view and consider wolves into the future.

The social landscape of wolves in Canada – preliminary findings was written by Drs. Stephanie Rutherford, Valli Fraser-Celin and Heather Hagen, with Lesley Fox and Aaron Hofman of The Fur-Bearers. The paper outlines results from the first national survey on how Canadians perceive wolves – and the important questions that still need to be asked.

British Columbia’s Wolf Cull

The killing of wolves and cougars in British Columbia to restore and maintain caribou populations unfairly victimizes these animals, while industrial development, human activity, and habitat destruction are the key factors driving caribou declines.

The Fur-Bearers gathers information about BC’s annual wolf cull through Freedom of Information Requests, to expose the issues of the program. In 2023, we also worked with BC artist Sarah Ronald to launch an ad campaign, raising awareness across the province. We’re calling on British Columbia to end the wolf cull.

Impactful Wolf Murals

Murals planned for Vancouver and Nelson will showcase the importance of wolves to environmental health while challenging viewers to consider the impacts of the government’s ongoing aerial kill program.

WeHowl, a non-profit focused on protecting wolves, has partnered with Drift Mural Co. to develop the first mural as part of the Vancouver Mural Festival. A second wolf mural will be painted in Nelson in late August 2024. Several NGOs included in financially supporting this project include Wolf Awareness, The Fur-Bearers, Humane Society International- Canada, Zoocheck, and Valhalla Wilderness Society.
