Open Letter: Will fur-free option be provided to Ministry staff?

Open Letter: Will fur-free option be provided to Ministry staff?

Dear Minister Michael Coteau,

We were disappointed to see that the OntarioMinistry of Children and Youth Services will be providing correctional workers with outerwear from Canada Goose. As you may be aware, to obtain coyote fur, which trims many of the American-owned company’s coats, inherently inhumane traps are used in the wild.

Leg-hold and Conibear-type traps are used to hold or kill coyotes, who can injure themselves easily while trying to escape the clutches of these devices. Snares are also used, which a recent study shows are ineffective in their function, and can lead to significant injury, including so-called ‘jelly head’ or the swelling of the head, in coyotes.

A growing population of Canadians oppose the use of fur due to the inherently inhumane fashion in which it must be cultivated – by killing wild animals, or rearing and killing wild animals kept in tiny cages on industrial-type fur farms.

The Fur-Bearers, and our more than 60,000 supporters, would like assurances from the Ministry that all workers for whom down-filled and fur-trimmed Canada Goose products are offered are also given an option that does not require the death or injury of animals.

We look forward to your response, and recommend you visit our website at TheFurBearers.com to learn more about the cruelty of the fur industry in Canada.

Sincerely,

Lesley Fox
