A fur farm owner is facing a $5,000 fine, 75 hours of community service, and a 15-year ban on animal ownership other than farmed mink for convictions on three counts of animal cruelty in Montérégie, Quebec. The charges concern foxes and two dogs on the fur farmer’s property.

The Montreal SPCA today announced the conviction and sentence, noting that it is the first time they’re aware of that a fur farmer has been convicted of animal cruelty in Canada.

The case stems from a 2014 investigation in which the Montreal SPCA, along with veterinarians, discovered injuries and health issues to foxes on the property including:

  • Dehydration
  • Emaciation
  • Toe fractures
  • Tail injuries
  • Tooth fractures
  • Ear and eye infections
  • Internal bleeding, and
  • Neurological issues.

Several foxes were humanely euthanized during the first investigative visit in May 2014. In August, 16 arctic foxes were seized as the owner of the farm didn’t have the appropriate permits for that particular species.

Photographic evidence from the investigation is disturbing (click here to see our past post, which contains graphic images).

Many questions remain: was the horrific suffering of all those animals worth $5,000 and two weeks of community service? Will the need for veterinary supervision stop the fur farm owner from trying to breed and kill mink?

We don’t have answers to many of these questions, but we do know that today we can celebrate a victory, no matter how small it may feel. And that tomorrow, we will continue to #MakeFurHistory.
