The Government of Prince Edward Island will hear from advocates looking to end trapping in the province both inside and outside the legislature on Thursday (May 2, 2024), morning.
Following a months-long campaign generating thousands of petition signatures from PEI residents, the petition is being heard by the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Committee. Local advocates Rene Lombard and Debbie Travers will present the case to end commercially regulated trapping on the island at 10 am on Thursday, May 2. The petition garnered 2,366 signatures from islanders, possibly the highest number of signatures presented to the Government.
According to a news release, the Committee hearings will be the first time that a provincial government has agreed to consult the public regarding opposition to trapping.
The committee will hear from numerous experts about how trapping is no longer necessary, and it may lead to the first provincial ban of traps in Canada.
Watch the Committee Hearing LIVE at 10 am Atlantic time (9 am ET or 6 am PT) at https://www.assembly.pe.ca/watch-live
The Fur-Bearers will continue to follow this campaign and provide updates as they are available.
Local advocates will also be rallying in support of the campaign outside the PEI legislature building on Thursday, May 2 at 9:30 am until 10 am. You can learn more about this effort by following the group on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/bantraps.
