Simple change in marathon route will protect runners and wildlife from each other

Over 2,000 runners from around the world are stretching out prior to the fourth annual Banff Marathon, but they’ll be hitting the pavement in a different direction than originally planned.

The CBC has reported that due to an increased level of activity among wildlife – including bears and wolves – runners will be taking an alternate route.

"Because it's been very active, Parks Canada has asked us to go to our secondary route," Paul Regensburg, event director told the CBC. "It is a bit more protected from the wildlife and it's on a corridor where there's less wildlife."

Particularly in an area that has recently seen conflict increase – to the point where a mother wolf was gunned down due to a drastic change in proximity tolerance – it is refreshing to see event organizers and parks staff create solutions to protect everyone involved.

In fact, small changes like this are exactly what co-existence is all about, and they're what The Fur-Bearers are always advocating.
