Three fun facts you didn’t know about chipmunks

Earlier today we posted a picture on Facebook and asked you to guess whose paw it was – and only a handful of people properly identified the long claws of the chipmunk! Here are three fun facts about these incredible rodents!

25 Species of Chipmunk: two dozen species of chipmunk can be found in North America, from the south of Mexico to the far northern tree line in Canada. The only species not found here is the Siberian chipmunk (Eutamias sibiricus).

They aren’t picky eaters: chipmunks are omnivores! While they’re known for their love of nuts and berries (in those adorable chubby cheeks), they’ll also eat mushrooms, fruits, insects, bird eggs, and snails!

Built in grocery bags: chipmunk’s adorable cheeks can expand to three times the size of their head, making it easier to get snacks back to their burrows!

Chipmunks are awesome little rodents, who make any backyard or natural spaces feel complete. But like all wild animals, it’s imperative that we respect them for who they are – and let them, and their families, stay wild.
