Do you worry about beavers flooding your property? Is there a culvert they plug up constantly, or an existing dam that is creating elevated water flow concerns? If you live in or around the Okanagan Valley, Eva Hartmann can help you create a solution to prevent further flooding.
A trainee in the Beaver Institute’s Beaver Corps program (on a scholarship from The Fur-Bearers), Eva is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator looking for a site to install pond levellers or culvert exclusion fences to finish her program, graduate, and actively practice human-beaver coexistence strategies in British Columbia.
The ideal site:
- In or near the Okanagan Valley
- Is owned by the homeowner needing help
- Has active beavers on-site
- Has a dammed creek or blocked culvert that is at risk of flooding a nearby road or building
The process for Eva will include a site visit, in-stream work permit application, and a one-to-two day assembly and installation of the devices. The entire project is supervised by beaver wetland experts from the Beaver Institute. Costs to the landowner are significantly less than ongoing lethal control, relocation, or dam removal.
If you’d like to reach out to Eva to see if your property is a fit, email her at [email protected]. If you want to learn more about the Beaver Corps. program (to which The Fur-Bearers provides funding for select Canadian students) visit www.beaverinstitute.org.
