The following news release was issued Thursday, September 24, 2026.
A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the identification and conviction of the person(s) responsible for a horrific injury caused by a leg-hold trap in the Brookswood neighbourhood of Langley this week.
Critter Care Wildlife Society, a licensed wildlife rehabilitation centre, was called by a concerned homeowner who saw the young male raccoon dragging a leg-hold trap. Upon assessment, the severity of injuries required humane euthanasia.
The Fur-Bearers, a wildlife charity founded in 1953, is issuing the reward and is concerned by the ongoing use of traps in residential areas.
“Traps like this are powerful and dangerous and predictably lead to serious injuries to wildlife,” says Lesley Fox, Executive Director of The Fur-Bearers. “We believe that there are potential violations of the Wildlife Act involved in this incident and are encouraging anyone with information to contact the BC Conservation Officer Service’s RAPP Line.”
This week’s incident isn’t the first time wildlife or domestic animals have been injured by traps in the Langley area. In September 2025, residents provided security camera footage showing a young raccoon dragging a trap, and also reported seeing a cat dragging a trap around Hi-Knoll Park, near the Surrey-Langley border.
“Traps are not a solution to conflict that homeowners may have with wildlife,” says Fox. “Particularly in residential or urban areas, it’s creating significant risk to all local wildlife, domestic pets, and even people. Trapping is not a solution to issues homeowners may have with wildlife, and can in fact exacerbate them.”
Anyone with information about the traps is encouraged to contact the RAPP Line at 1-877-952-7277or anonymously online at https://forms.gov.bc.ca/environment/rapp/. Residents who are looking for support in managing wildlife issues are encouraged to visit TheFurBearers.com/our-work/living-with-wildlife/ or the BC SPCA’s Animal Kind program to find humane, wildlife removal agencies.
