Fur product busted for bogus ‘cruelty free’ claim

After seeing an advertisment claiming that a fur product was 100% cruelty-free, a member of the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals took action.

Anne C., from Burnaby B.C. recently received a ‘daily deal’ from Internet site Dealfind. The ‘deal’ featured a collection of eyelash extensions made from real mink fur from the company Minxx Lashes. The company was claiming their fur product was 100% cruelty-free.

Knowing that minks are only raised on horrific fur farms, stuck in tiny cages and killed by gassing, strangulation or electrocution, Anne fought back.

She immediately filled a complaint withAdvertising Standards of Canada (ASC). Soon after Anne received a response.

In light of receiving her response, ASC staff said, “they carefully reviewed the advertising and contacted the advertiser for additional information. Upon receiving her complaint, the advertiser informed ASC that they removed the cruelty free claim from their website until they can receive further substantiation for it from the supplier.”

This is a good reminder for us to be critical of all advertising claims, especially when it comes to products made from animals.

Congratulations to Anne for her victory. One person can truly make a difference!
