Residents of the area have told local media that they’ve seen an apparent decline in raccoon populations – and recently photographed one of many raccoons who are missing appendages.
The injuries are consistent with the damage caused by a leg-hold trap, though the cause has not yet been determined. The Fur-Bearers are working with residents and Oak Bay police to find the individual(s) responsible.
We are also offering our assistance to anyone who may be struggling with wildlife conflict so such drastic action as trapping would not be required. The $1,000 reward is in addition to a community member who is offering $500, and will be distributed upon conviction of the person(s) responsible for the injuries of this and other Oak Bay area raccoons.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oak Bay police at 250-592-2424.
