Oscars announced, nods for fur-free actors

The nominations for the 85th annual Academy Awards were announced this week and some of our favourite fur-free folks are up for a golden boy. Curious to know who already has our vote for being fur-free and fabulous?

1. Anne Hathaway. It’s not just her animal-friendly footwear you need to watch out for, you can count on Anne to seriously rock the red carpet on Oscar night. This fur-free animal lover is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables. Besides being nominated, she is also many critics’ favourite. Her singing was no Milli Vanilli stunt either. All music for Les Miserables was performed and recorded live – no easy feat!

2.Joaquin Phoenix. To have him on your arm on Oscar night would make you an instant hit for ‘best dressed’. Joaquin is a very talented actor (he’s been nominated before for Walk the Line, The Gladiator), and this year he’s nominated for his role as Freddie Quell, a troubled man seeking guidance in The Master. What you might not know is that Joaquin is also a huge animal lover. He’s thrown his support behind several projects, including Earthlings, an intensely graphic documentary that explores the modern day use and abuse of animals.

3. Jessica Chastain. Also on Oscar’s roster this year, Jessica has been speaking out against animal cruelty for years. She’s famously said, “I don’t want to torture anything in my life.” It was this sentiment that made her work difficult in her nominated role of “Maya” in Zero Dark Thirty, which details the gory hunt for Osama bin Laden. As a way of coping with the stress on set, reports indicate that Jessica and director Kathryn Bigelow exchanged uplifting videos with each other of animal rescues. Aww.

PS – If you are betting on the Academy Awards, put your money on Lincoln for the sweep.

“I am in favour of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being.”
~ Abraham Lincoln
