The Fur-Bearers tries to stay out of the politics of other charities and non-profits. But sometimes, for the benefit of our members, it’s important that we clarify our position – and shed light on the position of others.
Our mandate is specific: to oppose the commercial fur industry, advocate for fur-bearing animals in the wild and in confinement, and to promote co-existence with wildlife. But at least one major wildlife charity revealed through an email that they in fact support the fur industry.
On their web site, the BCWildlife Federation states they are the province's“largestandoldestconservation organization. Our 50,000members are passionately committed to protecting, enhancing and promoting the wise use of the environment for the benefit of present and future generations. Our volunteers and donorsgive generously of their time and financesto supportto a wide range of wildlife conservation programs and projects.”
Supporters of The Fur-Bearers have noted that they donate to this organization, and a quick look at the majestic animal photos on their website, including some of the very real habitat conservation work the group does, gives a solid reason for that. But not as apparent is the organization’s support of the fur industry, which they discussed in an email to supporters (regarding the decision of Canadian Tire to stop selling fur products at two of its subsidiaries) on January 11, 2016:
“The BC Wildlife Federation in partnership with other Affiliates across Canada including Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) unequivocally supports the Canadian fur industry … The fur industry is not only an important part of the culture and heritage of Canada, it remains an important part of today’s economy and identify of many rural Canadians. To see proud Canadian retailers bow to the pressures of uninformed animal rights extremists is disappointing. It also highlights the need to continue educating corporations and the general public about the benefits of hunting, fishing, and trapping.”
The Fur-Bearers will not tell supporters whom they should support, or what activities they should enjoy. But it is vital that our supporters know the facts – and one of those facts is that supporting the BC Wildlife Federation means supporting the fur industry.
This fight isn’t over. We are expecting hard pushback from the fur industry, politicians, and others. Please donate now to help us prepare for what could be a major political battle in social media and news outlets. As little as $10 will go a long way in keeping up our message – and your message – that we want to #MakeFurHistory.
