Leg-hold traps remain legal across Canada

Leg-hold traps – the type that grip an animal by their foot or lower leg – remain legal across Canada and can be found in every province and territory.

Surprisingly, it remains unnecessary for trappers to notify nearby residents or recreationalists of their activities with simple signage – and that continues to put people and pets at risk.

Leg-hold traps are often set to target foxes, coyotes, raccoons, wolves, lynx and bobcats; they’re also often baited, which means domestic animals may be attracted to the site as well. While The Fur-Bearers continues to advocate for common sense regulation updates and outright bans of these traps, it’s vital for public safety and long-term success that the public be aware of these traps and know how to release their pets safely.

Please consider sharing this blog and the two videos embedded within it to help spread awareness of the dangers posed by recreational and commercial trapping, and provide the life-saving tools necessary to protect families and pets.
