The devastation caused by fires in Australia is still being calculated by officials and harrowing images have left many people around the world frightened and searching for ways to help.
The Fur-Bearers have compiled three simple things you can do to make a difference:
- Donate: The Fur-Bearers recommend donations be directed to WIRES (New South Wales Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Services) who focus on rehabilitation of native wildlife and/or World Vets who have an Australian-based emergency response team working in the field.
- Create: If you love to crochet, knit, or sew, you may be able to help more directly than you’d think. The Canadian Animal Rescue Craft group has shared patterns for items needed by rehabilitators and animal caregivers on the ground in Australia. Check out the group and the patterns on Facebook. If you don’t have the craft skills for these items but still love to create, simply share what you’ve made. Tell stories and give hope through your art online or locally – we’d certainly love to see some of it!
- Act Locally: Make the little changes that mean an awful lot in the fight against the climate crisis like working to limit air travel or using green transportation when possible, reducing meat and dairy consumption, using your purchase power to support local businesses or those who have strong environmental goals, or join local groups who are working to improve the community.
We can all make a difference as we mourn for the devastation, manage the trauma faced by so many and find hope, together.
