Infectious disease docs call on Premier John Horgan to end fur farming

A group of 29 British Columbia infectious disease specialists sent an open letter on October 7, 2021 to BC Premier John Horgan calling for an end to fur farming in the province. The letter reiterates the health hazards of mink farming raised by BC’s Provincial Health Officer and warns of the risks related to infectious diseases due to the intensive confinement of wild animals on BC’s fur farms.

The Order of the Provincial Health Officer – MINK FARMS, which placed a moratorium on mink breeding and new mink farms, expires on January 31, 2022. The group is calling on Premier John Horgan to make the current breeding ban permanent and close the remaining fur farms in the province by the end of 2021.
